The Hoxton Hotel, London UK

Location: London, UK

Design: Ennismore Design Studio

In 2006, the Hoxton Hotel opened the doors of its first location, housed on what was previously a carpark in an unloved corner of London’s East End. From there, things changed quickly, for both the neighbourhood and the hotel. With its refined, yet laidback interiors and a cosy, bustling lobby, the Hoxton Hotel’s magnetic pull attracted guests from all over the world. Evidence of its success story can be found in their new locations around London, as well as global capitals like Paris, Rome and New York.

Of the many qualities it takes to pull off such an expansion, it takes, above all, consistency. A location in Rome shouldn’t be a cookie-cutter replica of a location in LA, but it should feel like they’re part of the same family. This was abundantly clear to us, when we were tasked to provide lighting for the Hoxton’s newest location, nestled between the Tate Modern and Borough Market in London Southwark.

Teaming up with Ennismore, the parent company and their in-house design outfit, our team of project managers, product designers and engineers worked on this project for nearly a year. Our role was to supply bespoke lighting across the hotel’s public areas, including the plush lobby that Hoxton Hotels are known for.

Each of the Hoxton’s hotels are inspired by their local surroundings. When it came to our brief, we worked with a series of vintage and classic design references to create 22 completely bespoke table lamps, wall lights, ceiling fittings and pendants. As ever, the pieces are the result of an ongoing dialogue with our manufacturers, which only stops when each finished piece is a true representation of our client’s vision.

Following the hotel’s opening in September 2019, these pieces can now be seen aglow throughout hotel’s communal areas––high-traffic parts of the space that require lighting that’s both durable for everyday use, yet striking enough to make a lasting first impression.
