How to Choose the Right Chandelier for Your Room

From timeless classics to bold contemporary statements, a chandelier does far more than light a room - it gives it presence. Choosing the right one is about understanding your space, how it’s used, and how the light will work within it. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you find the perfect fit.

What Chandelier Size Works for My Room?
Add the room’s length and width together in metres. The total gives you a rough guide for the chandelier’s diameter in centimetres. So, if your room is 4m by 5m, you’re looking at something around 90cm wide.

Ceiling height matters too. In a standard room (around 2.4m), a shorter drop and a lighter, more open shape, such as our Andromeda, will always feel comfortable. If you have higher ceilings, you can afford to go longer and more sculptural; our Belle chandelier is the perfect example.

Stairwells and double-height entrances are different altogether - they’re made for impact. A cluster of pendants or a bespoke installation can draw the eye up and give the space presence.

In longer rectangular rooms, two chandeliers often work better than one. Position them evenly along the length of the room to keep things balanced. To size them, use the rule above to find the main diameter, then choose fittings that are around 60–70% of that measurement each.

If you’re still unsure, mock it up. A cardboard circle taped to the ceiling will quickly tell you whether the proportions feel right before you commit.

What Height Should My Chandelier Hang?
In a living room, the bottom of the chandelier should be at least 210cm from the floor, so it doesn't feel cramped or get in the way. Above a dining table, aim for 70–90cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the light - close enough to feel intimate, with enough headspace.

For taller ceilings in stairwells or double-height hallways, there’s more flexibility. A drop of around a quarter to a third of the ceiling height usually keeps the proportions looking balanced, though personal preference and the style of the chandelier can change this slightly.

Which Chandelier Materials Work Best?
The right material depends on the mood you want the room to carry. Glass amplifies light; fabric softens it; alabaster transforms a chandelier into a sculptural object whether lit or not. Our collection offers distinct characters across each material:

  • Glass is a classic favourite, giving an airy feel while catching and reflecting light beautifully.
  • Fabric, as seen in our Haze collection, brings a softer, more muted effect that works beautifully in intimate spaces such as bedrooms.
  • For something with a more sculptural, tactile quality, alabaster works beautifully in a chandelier. Even when switched off, it reads as a decorative piece within the room, and when lit it gives a soft, warm glow.

How do I make a chandelier work within the wider lighting scheme?
A chandelier should always be part of a layered lighting plan, working alongside wall lights, table lamps, and any recessed or accent lights. Keeping the bulb type consistent across fixtures ensures the room feels balanced, with no harsh or mismatched tones. We recommend bulbs with a Kelvin rating around 2,700K.

Dimmers are non-negotiable, allowing you to adjust the brightness and set the mood from lively and bright to relaxed and intimate. When your chandelier sits within a well-planned lighting scheme, it’s not just a feature piece - it becomes an integral part of the room’s atmosphere.

Don’t Be Afraid of a Statement
It’s easy to choose something smaller or simpler out of caution. Yet the ceiling is one of the few areas in a room that can take a confident design move.

If the proportions are right, the drop is carefully considered, and the material suits the setting, a chandelier will feel intentional and balance the room.
