The kitchen is the heart of the home and the island is at the centre of it all. It's where we naturally gather for conversations whilst also providing that much needed additional countertop space. The right lighting, both beautiful and functional, is key to ensuring your island will be the hardest working area of your home. Here is how to get every decision right.

What size pendant light works best over a kitchen island?
The fitting should feel proportionate to the island and the room. As a guide, the combined width of your pendants should not exceed two thirds of the island’s length, leaving breathing room at either end.

Overly large fixtures can overwhelm smaller islands, while undersized fixtures may appear inconsequential in larger spaces. Whether you opt for a row of single pendants, or a linear pendant that follows the length of the island, the key is that the fitting feels considered, balanced, and right for the scale of the room.

How many pendant lights do I need over a kitchen island?
For longer islands, go for a row of three or five single pendants - odd numbers tend to look more balanced, creating a natural midpoint, which the eye reads as intentional. For smaller islands, a single pendant or a cluster of mini pendants can do the trick - our Indi 3-light cluster works really well here, offering the visual interest of multiple pendants within a single, cohesive fitting.

How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?
Hang pendants approximately 75 to 90cm (30 to 36 inches) above the surface of the island. This gives sufficient clearance for practical tasks while keeping the light close enough to be effective.

We recommend confirming ceiling height early in the process, as unusually high or low ceilings can affect the ideal hanging height and which fittings are practical. If in doubt, get in touch and we can advise on drop length for your specific ceiling.

How far apart should kitchen island pendants be spaced?
Space pendants approximately 45 to 60cm (18 to 24 inches) apart. Find the midpoint of the island first and work outward symmetrically, leaving adequate clearance at each end.

Pendants positioned too close to the edge of an island look unbalanced and can feel crowded. Starting from the centre and spacing outward gives you a natural, considered rhythm across the length of the surface.

Kitchen Island Lighting Trends

Minimalist Elegance
Clean lines, understated shapes, and muted hues define the minimalist approach to kitchen island lighting. Simple yet sophisticated fixtures blend seamlessly with contemporary interiors, offering a timeless appeal that transcends fleeting trends.

Statement Pendants
Larger, eye-catching pendant lights are a popular choice for kitchen islands, adding a touch of drama and personality to the space. From sleek metallic finishes to artisanal glass designs, statement pendants serve as focal points while providing ample task lighting.

Organic Materials
Bringing in natural elements such as wood and earthy hues for kitchen lighting designs infuses spaces with warmth and character. These organic accents enhance the overall appeal, creating a welcoming environment.

What type of bulb should I use for kitchen island lighting?
Use LED bulbs with a high lumen output and a colour temperature between 2,700K and 3,000K. This range gives clear, practical light for cooking and preparation while remaining warm enough for relaxed evenings. The kitchen demands more light than most rooms given the precision of the tasks carried out within it. LEDs deliver the brightness required without the energy cost of older alternatives. Staying within the 2,700–3,000K range means the kitchen never feels clinical or harsh

Do I need other lighting in a kitchen with island pendants?
Yes. Island pendants serve that specific area well, but a kitchen needs layered lighting throughout. Ceiling spots or wall lights for worktops, accent lighting for shelving or under cabinets, and independent circuits for each layer are all worth considering.

The control setup matters as much as the fittings themselves. Breaking the kitchen into separate circuits gives you the flexibility to light the space for how you are actually using it:

  • Ambient lighting (like ceiling spots or flush fixtures) should be on its own circuit - ready to light up the whole space with one switch.
  • Pendant lights over the island or dining area deserve a separate switch so you can control them independently.
  • Accent lighting, like under-cabinet strips or shelf LEDs, should be on their own circuit too, giving you the option to turn them on for a soft glow when the rest of the lights are off.

Dimmers on each circuit complete the setup, allowing you to shift from task-focused brightness to a more relaxed atmosphere with ease. All our products are compatible with dimming systems proving the correct light bulbs are used.
